Happy New Year everyone, and thank you again for your continued support.
Following our petition, a flashing 20mph sign has now been installed near the school. While it was encouraging to see action taken, the reality on the ground has not changed.
Cars are still speeding, particularly on the stretch after the school and around the church, which remains the most dangerous part of the road. This area has:
A very narrow road
Pavement on only one side
High vehicle speeds that do not reflect the space available for pedestrians
Since many of us moved here, traffic levels have clearly increased. The road — especially near the church — was never designed for this volume or speed of traffic. What may have worked years ago is no longer safe today.
Key issues still unresolved:
Vehicles travelling well above 40mph
Unsafe pavement and road layout for walking, cycling, and pushing prams
We also learned that the flashing 20mph sign only operates during school hours (9am–3pm) — a time when traffic is already relatively quiet. Unfortunately, peak traffic times remain completely uncovered, making the sign far less effective than expected.
There is also confusing signage along the road: a 20mph sign near the nursery followed shortly by a 40mph sign near the church. This mixed messaging is contributing to ongoing speeding.
What we are asking for now:
A full safety assessment of the street, particularly around the church
Involvement from Thames Valley Police to review speeding and enforcement
Clearer and more consistent road signage
Consideration of additional traffic-calming measures
With over 900 supporters, our message is clear:
We want a street that is safe to walk, cycle, and live on — for children, families, elderly residents, and everyone in our community.
