3 Years Later: The threat that proved why Blooming Grove NEEDS police cameras.
The Issue
Three years ago, I was sitting peacefully in my legally parked car.
.
I was minding my own business and simply watching a movie on my phone.
.
Out of nowhere, an officer with the Blooming Grove River Police Department approached my vehicle.
.
He demanded my ID without any legal justification.
.
When I questioned him, he quickly escalated the situation.
.
He threatened to violently rip me out of my own vehicle.
.
The Power of the Camera
.
I stood firm on my constitutional rights.
.
More importantly, I pulled out my personal cell phone and recorded the entire encounter.
.
When a police supervisor arrived on the scene and saw my camera rolling, the dynamic instantly shifted.
.
The Sergeant immediately ordered the officer to walk away.
.
They let me go right away because my phone caught the absolute truth.
.
The video went viral and exposed this behavior to the public.
.
It caused a massive public outcry that forced the entire department to temporarily shut down its phone systems, social media pages, and emails just to hide from the community's response.
.
A Pattern of Mistreatment
.
I am not the only one this has happened to.
.
Over the years, many other community members have faced unfair targeting, aggressive intimidation, and mistreatment by this department.
.
The biggest problem is that when citizens do not have video proof, it becomes a "your word against theirs" situation.
.
Right now, the Town of Blooming Grove Police Department still operates with zero mandatory body-worn cameras or dashcams.
.
Our Demand for Action
.
No citizen should have to rely on their own phone screen to guarantee their safety and protect their constitutional rights.
.
Good officers want cameras to protect them from false claims, and the public needs cameras to hold bad policing accountable.
.
We are calling on the Blooming Grove Town Supervisor and the Town Board to immediately allocate municipal funds to fully equip every active patrol officer with body cameras and dashcams.
.
Please sign this petition to protect our community and bring real transparency to Blooming Grove.
