As a Mortgage Branch Manager in Hidalgo County, I have personally witnessed the crushing impact of escalating property tax values on homeowners and renters alike. Everyday hardworking individuals are finding it harder to keep a roof over their heads due to the uncontrolled rise in property tax values.

While the State of Texas does require property to be taxed at market value, it is within the power of municipal and county governments to impose a cap on these values. A proposed solution for this pressing issue is setting an annual cap of 3% increase on taxable property values for all property owners. This cap would provide a sense of stability to homeowners and renters, who indirectly cover these taxes through their rents.

According to the Tax Foundation, Texas has one of the highest property tax rates in the country, with an average rate of 1.69%. The issue is not just limited to Hidalgo County, but it is here we can start making a change.

It is not up to an individual to bear the weight of this issue alone. Our community needs to rally together to promote this proposal to the municipal governments in Hidalgo County and its Country.
