Personal story: Just someone who's angry at the lack of thought from people who claim to be on the side of social justice.
The issue: Apu is a caricature of an Indian convenience store worker. His accent is stereotypical, his beliefs are stereotypical. Taken out of the context of the show, you could make the argument that he's racist. But, when put in place with the rest of the Simpsons characters, he's just a caricature amongst caricatures. Homer is the stereotype of the American male, fat and lazy. Groundskeeper Willi is the stereotypical Scott, angry and loud. Cletus is the stereotype of a Southerner. Mr. Burns is the stereotype of the old rich guy, and so on and so on. But what people forget, each of these characters have virtues as well...yes, even Mr. Burns on occasion. Homer, despite his gluttony and greed, has time and time again demonstrated his love for his family, and works at a job he hates to keep a roof over their head and food on their plates. Groundskeeper Willi finds joy in job and has often put himself in harms way to protect the students of his school. Apu is a hardworking legal immigrant (he didn't start off legal, but he did the right thing in the end when given the chance). He, alongside his wife, are raising and caring for their 8 children. He loves his culture of origin, and loves the US. He is very often the voice of reason and wisdom...and his dedication to his job is legendary. Apu, like all the characters on the show, is so much more than the caricature. The people who have caused his removal don't understand any of this, and they don't understand that you can't just change how the character is written and the voice of the character in a show, like the Simpsons, which is completely entrenched in American culture...like it or not. Whenever something happens to a character's voice actor on the Simpsons, that character is removed...not altered.
Take action! It's time a stand was taken against the minded-people who can't see past the end of their nose...they can only see the caricature, not the character behind it, and that makes me wonder exactly what their racial sensibilities are. Sign this petition to try to save Apu! A character as iconic Apu deserves better.
