The graduates of the class of 2025 of Commonwealth University- Bloomsburg (Bloomsburg University) would like to request our commencement ceremonies be moved back outdoors. There was a lack of planning for an indoor ceremony, and the new restrictions affect many students. Students have family members and supporters coming from out of state, even taking planes to be here, and now some students have to tell those supporters they are not allowed to attend the ceremony anymore. Imagine flying across the country and being told “well you can go to another building to watch me over a screen.” Students and families had already purchased protective gear from the rain such as ponchos since we were told the ceremony was rain or shine. Students had reservations to restaurants that needed to be changed, but the biggest issue is the lack of air conditioning. Commonwealth - Bloomsburg claims they are switching the ceremony for the safety of the graduates but moving it inside places them more at risk for an adverse health event due to the expected temperature and humidity levels. Students that have worked incredibly hard to get to this point are no longer planning to walk at graduation because of the university’s poor planning. Many graduates this year did not have a high school graduation due to the pandemic and have been waiting for this day only for the university to rip it away from them. Please sign the petition in favor of moving the ceremonies back outside. There is no longer a chance of rain, and those of us signing the petition are stating we do not mind getting a little wet if it does rain. I would rather be wet from rain than wet from sweat inside where I am worried about passing out or my grand parents health while they try to support me. As a big PASSHE school do better Bloomsburg.
