Civic Engagement for the Arts Coalition started this petition to 2020 Presidential Candidates and

To all candidates running in the 2020 Presidential Election,

As artists both young and old, supporters of the arts, art educators, and advocates of artistic culture, we are petitioning all respective candidates to take a stronger stance in protecting and bolstering the arts in America.

For several years there have been repetitive attempts to cut funding to the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities. Subsequently, there have been severe budget cuts to arts programs all over the nation, both in public school programs and collegiate level programs. The lack of funding is forcing more and more programs to close every year. The arts are more than “craft time,” but a tool used to develop creativity, communication skills, empathy, work ethic, and several other important life skills.

We, as artists and supporters of, ask each candidate to take a more aggressive stance on protecting a field that creates culture, entertainment, exploration of emotion, and perspective on the ever-changing world. The arts are often a way of communicating love, acceptance, and diversity; things each candidate hopes to achieve.

We suggest you consider the following:

- Creating a plan to protect the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities
- Create a plan to protect art education in all public institutions
- Create a program dedicated to providing necessary materials to art teachers/ institutions, just as the Government does for STEM.
- Incorporate Arts into STEM, creating STEAM.
- Promise to support the arts in your everyday life. Acknowledge the paintings you see, the television shows you watch, the fictional novels you read.

The arts play an underrated role in our everyday lives. Political stance plays no role in determining the future of this field. We ask every candidate to consider including an Arts Protection Program into your campaign.
