Protect the Amazon Rainforest

NOTE: Pope Francis has called for a three-week synod, or meeting of bishops, in 2019, specifically to address the church’s response to the ecological crisis in the Amazon, where deforestation threatens what he has called the “lung” of the planet and the indigenous peoples who live there.

Dear Leaders of the 2019 Synod,

The youth of the world are in support of Pope Francis' Encyclical letter LAUDATO SI’ which calls for all peoples from all faiths and backgrounds to CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME. We champion your work and ask you to engage in global conversation with world leaders to defend our future and promote the protection of our greatest land ecosystems, the Amazon and the world's forests.

Experts state the the Amazon Rainforest gives us approximately 2 trillion dollars in ecosystem services yearly (air, water, food, soil, energy, habitat, natural resources, biodiversity, medicine, regulation of climate, carbon sequestration, cultural services, aesthetics, etc.)

However, we feel that the Amazon Rainforest is invaluable, irreplaceable, and, therefore there is NO value that is equal to the benefits given to the world by these critical forests.

Unfortunately, the Amazon is being destroyed, compromising our future. Without proper care, not only will the economic bounty that is reaped from the Amazon disappear, but so will the global benefits from these great forests.

The Amazon Rainforest:

• helps regulate weather
• carries 20% of the worlds fresh water to sea
• houses the highest numbers of plants and animals
• is home to approximately 400 indigenous groups
• produces 20% of the planet's oxygen
• releases 20 billion tons of moisture into the atmosphere daily

We ask, "what are the real riches?" If we do not pay attention to Mother Nature's cries for help, maybe our leaders will pay attention to the cries of our children.

We appeal to you, members of the Synod, to ask the world leaders to protect the Amazon rainforest, with it's boundless natural beauty and crucial global benefits. We know that there are solutions for working sustainably in the world's forests, and we challenge you to promote strategies that ensure the Amazon's future and the Earth as we know it.

As Pope Francis has stated:
"The urgent challenge to protect our COMMON HOME includes a concern to bring the WHOLE HUMAN FAMILY together to seek a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change. ... Humanity still has the ability to work together in‎ building our common home. ... Particular appreciation is owed to those who tirelessly seek to resolve the tragic effects of environmental degradation on the lives of the world’s poorest. Young people demand change. They wonder how anyone can claim to be building a better future without thinking of the environmental crisis and the sufferings of the excluded."
