The Issue

Students are paying $200 for a student parking pass, yet there is NOT enough parking for the number of students who purchased passes.

This is especially concerning with the opening of a brand-new residence building that houses more than 200 students, yet the lot has fewer than 100 parking spacesavailable in the lot —and those spaces are shared with another building.

How is it reasonable to house more than 200 students in a new building and provide fewer than 100 parking spaces, while also requiring students to purchase parking passes? The overflow lot is now full, and students are being told that the parking lots are “sold out.”

Ultimately, parking was oversold. If there are more students with parking passes than available spaces, the school should limit parking passes based on the number of spaces available—first come, first served. Safety and Security are also aware that there are reportedly around three times as many registered vehicles as available parking spaces.

The lack of communication has made this situation even more frustrating.
• We were told we could street park, but Newport police are handing out tickets.

• We were told we could park at the library, but the school is handing out tickets there.

• The overflow lot is full.

• The designated student parking lots are full.

• Yet students have paid $200 for parking.

Students should not have to pay $200 for a parking pass and then spend their time trying to figure out where they are legally allowed to park without receiving a ticket.

At this point, students and parents deserve clear answers:
How many student parking passes were sold?

How many student parking spaces are actually available?

Why were more passes sold than available spaces?

Why does a brand-new residence building, knowing it would be housing 200+ students, have fewer than 100 parking spaces shared with another building?

And what is being done for the students who paid $200 and still cannot park?

Students who paid for parking and cannot reasonably access a parking space should be given their $200 back.

If you are a student or parent dealing with this issue, please comment and share this post. This is a problem that needs to be addressed by the school.
