1st Middle Passage Marker in the Caribbean - Humacao, Puerto Rico
1st Middle Passage Marker in the Caribbean - Humacao, Puerto Rico
The Issue
In 1859, the last illegal slave ship to arrive to Puerto Rico - the Majesty / la Majestad - had an estimated 600-900 captives aboard who had been stolen from the area of the Kongo River in Central Afrika. After nearly seven months at sea, the ship ran aground in the waters of Humacao and quickly began to make sales to local plantations (an estimated 330) before it was overtaken by the Spanish colonial government.
During the upcoming 10th Bomba Research Conference, we want to commemorate this history and honor these ancestors with a ceremony on Sunday, September 3, 2023 and placard identifying the coast of Humacao as a #LugarHistórico (historic site) for the Afrikan Diaspora.
This will be the FIRST placard in the Caribbean to join the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project. We already have 80+ entities (organizations, groups or projects) that have articulated their support for this project.
Please add your INDIVIDUAL NAME to this petition. It is time to visibilize this little-known ancestral history!
