The NWT Department of Health and Social Services is responsible for the Child and Family Services Act, which states "...decisions concerning children should be made in accordance with the best interests of children...".

While there are many circumstances surrounding why children would need the NWT Department of Health and Social Services to make decisions for their protection, the Act  is quite clear, that the decisions need to place the best interest of children first.

To ensure that the NWT Department of Health and Social Services is placing the needs of children first, a Children's Advocate can review decisions affecting children and, if required, provide direction as to the best interests of children. A Children's Advocate therefore ensures that the best interest of children are always at the forefront of decisions made affecting a child's well being. Anyone can appeal to a Children's Advocate to highlight their concerns as it may relate to the best interest of children.

As a Foster Parent, I can personally appreciate some of the challenges that the NWT Department of Health and Social Services faces when making their decisions relating to children needing protection. I can also say that the Department doesn't get it right every time, sometimes placing the best interests of children second to other issues affecting the children. No need to take my word, the 2018 Auditor General of Canada's Report on Child and Family Services in the NWT "...concludes that the Department of Health and Social Services and the Health and Social Services Authorities did not meet key responsibilities for the protection and well-being of children, youth, and their families." Read the whole report.

We, the NWT residents, need to do more and we need to do it better. The innocent children of the NWT are counting on us. Please voice your support for the need of a Children's Advocate in the NWT by signing this petition.
