On April 10, 2016 in St. Landry Parish, Eunice, Louisiana,  a small, DEAF 16-year-old SENIOR PUG named, Meiko, wandered away from her home to a house and was FATALLY SHOT, then disposed of in a trash can by a neighbor named, Leroy Arabie. Arabie claims the pug came onto his porch and that because she seemed unwanted and wasn't on a leash, that he didn't do anything wrong.

We, the undersigned, are Concerned Citizens who urge you to act now. We are angry and saddened and seek the arrest of Mr. Leroy Arabie by Sheriff Bobby Guidroz, and the maximum animal cruelty penalties, charged by the prosecutor for Meiko's killer.

Mrs. Arabie, in protecting her husband, claims that because other animals have come onto their farm in the past and hurt their dogs, they felt that this dog was unwanted and just a stray, and they did nothing wrong. Mrs. Arabie said, "I tried to shoo it away." They also admit that they thought the dog was deaf. So, instead of taking this poor old deaf dog in and calling for help, or trying to locate the owners, the farmer murdered him on the spot.

Meiko's distraught family had immediately started looking for her, and put signs up everywhere offering a $200 reward. They also started frantically sharing on Facebook..."$200 REWARD!!!!!!!! Words can not even describe how scared and sick to my stomach I am!!!! My little dog has been missing for close to 2 hours now. Brent let her out to potty and she has disappeared! After Meiko's family learned of his being brutally killed, the woman posts this facebook message -- "I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart that helped in trying to find my baby. I was taken back by all of you that shared my status and even drove over looking for her. She was located by word only. She was shot and killed by Leroy Arabie "for making his dogs bark". Not only did he shoot her but he threw her in the trash. I am so numb! God please help me to forgive this man and allow for necessary action to be taken against him for cruelty to animals. Meiko deserves everything I can do in my power to make sure we prevent this from happening to other animals! Animals have rights! People need to be held accountable!"

The family called deputies, but they handled it by telling the family that there was nothing they can do since the dog was already in the trash and trash had been picked up. They left even though the farmer admitted to his crime. The pug had been thrown into the trash the trash was taken away before the family learned of his whereabouts.

On April 12, A concerned woman left a note on the Humane Society Of Louisiana's facebook page telling of this horrible tragedy. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153338149947084&set=o.280239690536&type=3&theater I immediately shared it onto the NATIONAL PUG RESCUE FB private group which has almost 10,000 followers. I then contacted the Landry Sheriffs office demanding to speak to the Sheriff in charge as to why nothing had been done. I was put through to Sheriff Bobby Guidroz directly and was shocked to learn he had not even heard of this crime happening. "I am an animal lover myself and was not told of this. No report was filed." He was very concerned that he had not been told about the situation and that it had not been properly handled. He said he would take immediate action and that the farmer would be arrested on animal cruelty charges.  Guidroz said he would call me back to update me. He did about an hour later. Guidroz says he and deputies will be arriving on the farmers property 9:30 am tomorrow April 13.

We, concerned citizens seek the maximum penalty and we will not accept anything less.

This farmer should have his guns taken away and should no longer be able to handle a gun for the rest of his life as he is a danger to society. Anyone who can point blank shoot any living being for simply walking up to his property looking for help, without questioning, or trying to help the innocent being... for no other reason except that the pug was a nuisance.

Animals deserve to be treated with the same respect and decency as we treat humans.  He not only killed the pug but THREW HIM IN A TRASH CAN!  This sweet, harmless pug was a beloved a family member.  He had just reached his 16th birthday. He was lost, he was scared, and all the farmers  had to do was take her in and call somebody to report a missing pug was found on their property.

Sheriff Bobby Guidroz, please arrest Leroy Arabie and see to it that he is prosecuted on the maximum animal cruelty charges, and show the rest of the country that the South will no longer tolerate people shooting animals for simply entering their property.

I feel for the family who miss their beloved pet. I lost my 16 year old pug a month ago and I miss him every day. He died in my arms after a long life full of love. I cannot image losing my pet in this way and then not even able to bury it."
