Congratulations campaigners!
We have had a shift from the Government with Amber Rudd yesterday confirming that a task force will be set up to process documentation free of charge for anyone who came here from the Commonwealth before 1973. But is it enough?
After relentless lobbying from many quarters (including you the petition signers) questions on the matter were heard yesterday in the House of Commons. David Lammy MP gave a rousing speech linking the current disgrace to the historical atrocities of colonisation and enslavement. His speech can be viewed here: https://bit.ly/2qE9PHo
He further went on to demand answers on the numbers detained, refused healthcare, lost work, denied their rights and even deported.
It appears that legal immigration protection was erased by the Government in 2014 https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/apr/16/immigration-law-key-clause-protecting-windrush-immigrants-removed-in-2014
So, what next? It is important that reparatory justice is sought. This episode is just one in many many years of attack on people from the African heritage communities and therefore constitutes an element of the Maangamizi - the historic and current attack on people of African descent. You can sign the overarching petition here: https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-maangamizi-we-charge-genocide-ecocide
We must work towards justice, we have an opportunity now to put pressure on Amber Rudd to review and compensate those harmed through this latest immigration shame.
