現在、東京国立博物館前の池を埋め、イベント等を催せるような芝生へと改修する計画が進められています。

 

"誰もが来たくなる博物館"というコンセプトが挙げられていましたが、場所にはそれぞれの役割があると私は考えています。

例えば、あなたが大切な目上の方との食事会をセッティングしようとした時、賑やかなフードコートを真っ先に選ぶ人はいないでしょう。

場所には、その場所だけが担える役割を果たす責任があり、また私たちには、その場所を後世に残していく責任があります。

 

 

池管理の費用や難しさを懸念する声も見受けられましたが、それは多くの水資源や定期的な芝刈り、化学肥料を要する芝生に変えた場合でも同じです。

米国では数年前から芝生をより持続可能な在来植物へ植え替えする運動が始まっていますし、池を埋め、芝生へ改修すれば良いという考えはあまりにも時代錯誤的な考え方なのです。

 

喧騒から離れ、展示品と対峙する時間を守りたいひとたち、今 私と同じように この博物館の改悪に心を痛めているひとたちは、争いを好まず そっと口を閉ざすひとが多いのではないか 勝手にそう感じています。

私もそのひとりです。けれどもう、何もせずに大切なものが壊されていくのは嫌です。

Plans are currently underway to fill in the pond in front of the Tokyo National Museum and convert it into a lawn where events can be held.

The concept behind this project is to create a museum that everyone will want to visit, but I believe that each location has its own role to play.

For example, if you were trying to arrange a dinner party with an important superior, a bustling food court would probably not be the first choice.

Locations have a responsibility to fulfill a role that only they can play, and we have a responsibility to preserve these places for future generations.

Some people have expressed concerns about the cost and difficulty of pond management, but this is the same even if they were to replace the lawn with one that requires a lot of water, regular mowing, and chemical fertilizer.

In the United States, a movement to replace lawns with more sustainable native plants began several years ago, so the idea that simply filling in ponds and converting them into lawns is completely anachronistic.

I have a feeling that many of the people who want to protect the time they can spend facing the exhibits, away from the hustle and bustle, and who, like me, are distressed by the museum's deterioration, do not like conflict and will keep quiet.
I am one of them. However, I no longer want to let something important be destroyed while doing nothing.
