I am angry.

“Chi-gyu” (チー牛) was originally nothing more than the name of a dish: cheese gyūdon (a beef bowl topped with cheese). However, at some point, this word began to be used online as a derogatory slang term targeting women. It spread as an expression used to mock and dehumanize women, referring to what are described as “annoyingly loud, misandrist ‘difficult women’,” sometimes labeled with variations such as “chi-mesu,” “chi-gyu difficult women,” or similar terms.

This is clearly hate speech, and many women have been hurt by the use of this word.

It is often claimed that, starting around the 2020s, the term originated from online stereotypes portraying so-called “difficult women” with intensified misandry (hatred of men), who supposedly make strange, meaningless shrieking noises like “chi-chi” or “chigyua” (nonsensical onomatopoeia), while ranting, “going crazy,” and repeatedly engaging in male-bashing or discrimination against men. Based on these caricatures, the slur was coined and spread.

However, regardless of how it is justified or explained, this kind of insult directed at women is absolutely unacceptable. Mocking people based on appearance is a form of lookism, and derogatory language aimed at specific appearances—especially verbal abuse carried out online—has already created countless victims. It is not difficult to imagine the severe negative impact such attacks have on women’s self-image and mental well-being.

In order to stop this kind of verbal violence, we call for the use of the term “Chi-gyu (cheese gyūdon)” as a derogatory expression to be made illegal, and for appropriate penalties to be established. We will continue to raise our voices in pursuit of legislation that recognizes and regulates this term as hate speech.
