For decades, democratic governments have been playing a ridiculous game in which they pretend that Taiwan isn't a country so that they can stay on good terms with the belligerent authoritarians in Beijing. It's time to stop.

The Taiwanese government just put out a statement asking the international community to help with its renewed bid to join the United Nations. While we can't change the behavior of other countries, we can at least start by changing our own. Call on your country's elected representatives to treat our friends in Taiwan with the equality and dignity they deserve; to recognize Taiwan as the sovereign, independent country that it is; and to establish full diplomatic relations. If your government representatives won't do it, vote them out and elect different ones who are willing to stand up for democratic values. This is one issue that is more important than Chinese RMB. Our morals and our relationship with Taiwan should not be for sale.
