Last night, Japan once again rectified Taiwan's name, this time at the opening ceremony at the Tokyo Paralympics:
NHK anchor announces 'Taiwan' team at Tokyo Paralympics (Taiwan News, 25 Aug 2021)
Also, a new op-ed was published on a major political news site in the United States:
Biden must tell Beijing: 'War means instant independence for Taiwan' (The Hill, 24 Aug 2021)
The author, Joseph Boscoe, suggests:
"Biden should tell Beijing that any more threats of force against Taiwan’s participation in the [Summit for Democracy] will trigger immediate diplomatic recognition of Taiwan and an official statement of Washington’s new “One China, One Taiwan” policy."
As an American, it is my personal view that the United States should give immediate diplomatic recognition to Taiwan, no strings attached. Not doing so is a failure in moral leadership. I encourage other Americans to not vote for candidates of either party (Republican or Democrat) who continue to endorse the outdated policies of discrimination against Taiwan (euphemistically known as "strategic ambiguity"). Here is an example of a US politician who recently made a principled stand:
Republican Lance Gooden calls for US to establish official ties with Taiwan (Taiwan News, 19 Aug 2021)
I heard about a book a few days ago called "The Chickenshit Club." It is not about Taiwan, but I think the name is appropriate for all of those American politicians and public intellectuals who are too cowardly to stand up to the Chinese Communist Party and to treat our Taiwanese friends with the dignity and respect they deserve.
