Subject: Strong Rebuttal Against the United Arab Emirates' Unfounded Claims of Sovereignty Over three Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf—Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa.

Dear Mr. Josep Borrell,

I am writing to bring your attention to the baseless claims made by the UAE regarding the three Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf—Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa. These islands have been under Iranian sovereignty long before British colonial intervention in the region. In 1971, prior to the establishment of the UAE, these islands were rightfully returned to Iran after being occupied by the British. It is critical that any discussions regarding these islands are rooted in historical facts and legal realities, not unfounded assertions.

To support Iran’s rightful claim to these islands, I would like to present several key pieces of historical evidence:

1.The “Empire of Persia” Map (1779): One significant source is the famous map Carte de l’Empire de Perse drawn by Jean-Baptiste d’Anville, the head of the Royal Geographers’ Society at the French court. This map clearly depicts Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa as part of Iranian territory. The historical recognition of these islands as Iranian is indisputable.

2.Historical Treaties and Agreements: The 1903 Anglo-Persian Agreement explicitly recognized Iranian sovereignty over the islands. Furthermore, the 1921 Treaty of Friendship between Iran and the UK reaffirmed this sovereignty, leaving no room for contestation.

3.British Official Records: Documents from British colonial officials throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries consistently acknowledge Iran’s control over the islands. Reports from prominent British figures, such as Sir Percy Sykes and Sir Henry McMahon, detailed Iran’s historical claims, emphasizing that these islands were recognized as Iranian long before the establishment of modern-day UAE.

4.James Morier’s Travelogue (1818): In his Second Journey through Persia, Armenia, and Asia Minor, British diplomat James Morier refers to Greater and Lesser Tunb as barren “Iranian islands,” further proving that European observers of the time acknowledged the islands as part of Iran.

5.International Recognition in the 1970s: Following the withdrawal of British forces from the Persian Gulf in the early 1970s, Iran reasserted its control over the islands. There was no contest from other nations, further solidifying Iran’s claim.

6.Official Pre-Revolutionary Iranian Documents: Documents from Iran’s government before the 1979 revolution record the return of these islands to Iranian sovereignty by the British in 1971. Notably, these records show that even the UAE acknowledged Iran’s ownership at the time.

These historical facts provide a comprehensive basis for understanding Iran’s legitimate claim to these islands. The UAE’s current claims, which lack historical and legal foundation, only serve to destabilize the region and overlook Iran’s longstanding, legitimate rights.

As a leading representative of European diplomacy, I trust that you will consider these essential historical facts in all relevant discussions. Upholding fairness and justice in any deliberations concerning Iran’s territorial integrity is paramount to fostering peace and stability in the region.

Sincerely,
