Au très honorable monsieur Justin Trudeau, Premier Ministre du Canada,

Monsieur le Premier Ministre,

Nous vous écrivons en tant que citoyens canadiens qui ont à cœur l'harmonie sociale au Canada et ailleurs dans le monde.
Nous avons étés choqués par la publication d'un membre de votre caucus. Ses propos montraient un manque de jugement total et une insensibilité pouvant mener à des conséquences très regrettables.

Il s'agit du communiqué écrit le 24 juillet par la Députée de Saint-Laurent Emmanuella Lambropoulos concernant la Mosquée Hagia Sophia, nous désirons rétablir certains faits et nous objecter à sa déclaration.

Il faut tout d’abord tenir compte que pendant plusieurs siècles, soit de 1453 à 1935, ce site historique était en fait une mosquée à part entière. Des générations de musulmans y ont fait leur prière. Elle a été convertie en musée par un décret du fondateur de la République turque Kemal Atatürk.

Lorsque la députée allègue que c’est contraire au droit international et qu’il s’agit d’un site reconnu par l’Unesco, nous soulignons que de nombreux lieux de culte à travers le monde sont reconnus par l’Unesco comme patrimoines mondiaux.

Récemment le plus haut tribunal administratif de la Turquie, après plusieurs recherches, a décidé de redonner à Hagia Sophia son statut de mosquée tout en précisant qu’elle pourra accueillir les visiteurs quelles que soient leurs convictions religieuses.
La Cour a pris sa décision en se basant sur des milliers de documents rassemblés par des historiens et académiciens reconnus qui ont prouvé que le site était acheté en 1453 par l’argent personnel du Sultan Mohammed II et que la décision d’Atatürk était invalide.

Il est très inapproprié qu’un parlementaire canadien interfère dans des décisions de tribunaux étrangers.
Par ailleurs madame Lambropoulos porte un jugement sur le fait que l’Imam a tenu une épée lorsqu'il livrait son sermon de vendredi. Ce type d’affirmation est aussi très inapproprié. Il s’agissait d’une tradition culturelle tout comme dans notre hymne national du Canada on fait référence à la Croix et à l’épée.

Il y a lieu de se poser la question à quel titre la Députée de Saint-Laurent a émis un tel communiqué. Il est important de noter qu’elle l’a émis avec l’entête de la Chambre des communes et l’a signé comme députée de Saint-Laurent sur sa page Facebook officielle.
Son rôle n’est-il pas de représenter tous les citoyens de son comté et les positions officielles du Parti Libéral du Canada plutôt que d’adopter visiblement les positions du gouvernement de la Grèce ? En effet, dès le début de son communiqué elle prend part dans le conflit qui oppose la Grèce à la Turquie en ce qui concerne les eaux territoriales.
À notre avis une telle affirmation devrait être la prérogative des autorités compétentes et non d’un simple député. Tant qu’à prendre Parti en faveur de la Grèce, il est important de souligner qu’il y a plusieurs centaines d’églises et synagogues en Turquie alors qu’en Grèce il n’existe aucune mosquée officielle. Qu’est-il arrivé des lieux de prière musulmans existant pendant les 4 siècles que la Grèce était sous le régime ottoman ?

Tout ceci prouve que ce dossier très sensible à la communauté musulmane devrait être exempte de jugement de la part d’une députée qui devrait représenter tous les citoyens du comté de Saint-Laurent où habitent de milliers de canadiens de confession musulmane.
Ce faisant il nous semble qu’elle a fait preuve d’un manque de jugement et de sensibilité à l’égard de ces citoyens. Cela incite à la discorde entre les citoyens canadiens d'origines diverses en ce temps où tous les citoyens doivent se serrer les coudes pour faire face à la pandémie de la Covid 19 et bâtir un avenir commun dans l’harmonie.

Nous demandons au Parti Libéral du Canada de se dissocier de cette déclaration, de sanctionner la députée Emmanuella Lambropoulos et de présenter des excuses aux Canadiens de confession musulmane.

Mr. Prime Minister,

We write to you as Canadian citizens who care about social harmony in Canada and around the world. A country known for its diversity and
Multiculturism, a place where discrimination doesn’t exist.
We were shocked by the Facebook statement made by a member of your caucus. This statement showed a total lack of judgment and an insensitivity towards her Muslim residents in a large Muslim populated riding, a statement made as the MP for Saint-Laurent, could lead to very regrettable consequences. The statement was posted on July 24, 2020 on the official Facebook page of MP Emmanuella Lambropoulos! concerning the Hagia Sophia Mosque and Turkish domestic policies.
We wish to re-establish certain facts and object to her declaration. It must first be taken into account that for several centuries, from 1453 to 1935, this historic site was in fact a mosque in its own right. Generations of Muslims have prayed there. It was converted into a museum by a decree of the founder of the Turkish Republic Kemal Atatürk.
Ms. Lambropoulos alleges that it is on the contrary to international law and that it is a site recognized by UNESCO. We would like to draw your attention to the fact that many places of worship around the world are recognized by UNESCO as world heritage. Recently Turkey's highest administrative court, after several searches, decided to restore Hagia Sophia to its original status as a mosque while specifying that it will remain a sightseeing attraction for visitors regardless of their religious beliefs. The court made its decision based on thousands of documents collected by renowned historians and academics which proved that the site was purchased in 1453 by the personal money of Sultan Mohammed II and that Ataturk's decision was invalid.

It is highly inappropriate for a Canadian parliamentarian to interfere with such decisions of foreign courts, based solely on her Greek origin, forgetting that she is a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of Canada, voicing her constituents voice and issues that concern her riding.
In addition, Mrs. Lambropoulos judges the fact that the Imam held a sword when he delivered his sermon on Friday. This type of statement is also very inappropriate. It was a Turkish cultural tradition just as in our national anthem of Canada we refer to the Cross and the sword.
The question arises on what bases did the Member of Parliament for Saint-Laurent issue such a statement. It is important to note that she issued it with the letterhead of the House of Commons and signed it as the Member of Parliament for Saint-Laurent on her official Facebook page. Isn't her role to represent all the citizens of her riding and the official positions of the Liberal Party of Canada rather than choosing to side and adopt the government of Greece position? In fact, she started her statement by taking part and aligning her with the official position of the Greek government in the conflict between Greece and Turkey with regard to territorial waters. In our opinion, such an assertion should be the prerogative of the competent authorities and not of a simple MP. While siding with Greece, it is important to point out that there are several hundred churches and synagogues in Turkey while in Greece there is no official mosque. What happened to the Muslim places of prayer that existed during the 4 centuries that Greece was under Ottoman rule? All this proves that this issue, which is very sensitive to the Muslim community, should be free from judgment on the part of a member of Parliament who should represent all the citizens of the riding of Saint-Laurent, where thousands of Canadians of Muslim faith live. In doing so, it seems to us that she displayed a lack of judgment and sensitivity towards these citizens. This incites discord among Canadian citizens of diverse origins at a time when all citizens must join together to face the COVID-19 pandemic and build a common future in harmony. A Member of Parliament should be a reason to bring us together rather than dividing and causing conflict between her constituents.

We call on the government of Canada and the Liberal Party of Canada to disassociate itself from this statement. Moreover, the apology from MP Emmanuella Lambropoulos to Canadians of Muslim faith.
