As we celebrate World Suicide Prevention Day, whose theme is "Creating Hope Through Action," it's a poignant reminder that suicide is a major public health problem with far-reaching social, emotional, and economic consequences. Globally, more than 700,000 lives are lost to suicide each year, impacting countless others who are left behind. In Kenya, suicide is the leading cause of death among young people.
1 in 4 Kenyans will experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime, with anxiety and depression affecting millions, yet only 10% receive help. Sadly, the individuals who actually get help in mental health care facilities endure deplorable conditions, reminiscent of the treatment of animals – locked in solitary confinement, subjected to abuse, stripped of dignity, and denied proper care. Sadly, this continues today, prompting a call for change through a petition to the Health Ministry.
Additionally, there's an urgent demand to allocate more resources for mental health, ensure accessibility to mental health services, and foster supportive work environments. This is because Kenya grapples with a mental health crisis exacerbated by the cost of therapy, stigma, and punitive measures against suicide attempts.
By signing this petition, we not only advocate for comprehensive mental health reform but also align with the global effort to reduce suicide rates, providing hope and support to those in need.
Together, we can create a compassionate society that values mental well-being and preserves human life.
