LOTM SA: Leave No Trace Movement — Clean Spaces, Responsible Choices
The Issue
Our beaches and public spaces are some of the most beautiful places we share, and they should be treated with care and respect. But in many areas, litter has become a real problem, especially in places like beaches where people go to relax and enjoy nature.
In my area, I often wake up to litter that has been blown into my property, which was not ours to begin with, and still has to be cleaned and thrown away. Not only does this make our community look unpleasant, but it also harms our environment and reflects a lack of care for the spaces we all share.
Even where rules already exist, like restrictions on drinking in certain public areas, people still gather and sometimes leave behind bottles, plastic, and other waste. This litter does not just stay in one place. It gets blown around, ends up in nearby areas, and can even reach residential yards, affecting whole communities.
I believe the issue is not that we do not have rules, but that people do not always take responsibility for what they leave behind. Cleaning up after yourself only takes a few minutes, but when it is ignored, it becomes someone else’s problem for a long time.
To put it into perspective, imagine planning a day at the beach during golden hour. You are taking photos, enjoying the view, and everything feels peaceful. But later, when you zoom into your pictures, you notice litter in the background or scattered across the scene. It instantly changes the mood and takes away from what should have been a calm, beautiful moment.
We do not necessarily need more rules or reminders. What we need is a stronger sense of personal responsibility and awareness.
This is not about being perfect. It is about respect for the environment, for other people, and for the spaces we all use.
A clean environment is something we all enjoy, but it can only stay that way if we each do our part.
We, the undersigned, commit to:
- Not littering in public spaces, including beaches, streets, and parks
- Properly disposin of all waste, or taking it home when bins are not available
- Respecting rules in public areas, including restrictions on drinking where applicable
- Encouraging friends and family to clean up after themselves
- Practising a “2-minute responsibility” mindset, cleaning up immediately instead of delaying it.
