UGA Responds to Community’s Pleas for Emergency Blue Lights On Campus After Tragic Loss
Aug 19, 2024

Laken Hope Riley’s death was a heartbreaking event that galvanized the UGA community into action. On the morning of February 22, Laken went for a run at a park on campus. When she didn’t return, her concerned roommate contacted campus security.
Tragically, Laken’s body was found with visible injuries in a wooded area behind Lake Herrick, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. This devastating loss highlighted the glaring lack of emergency blue lights on campus, an issue that had long been a point of contention among students.
A Tragic Loss Sparks a Movement
In the wake of this tragedy, fellow UGA student Diane Moon started a Change.org petition calling for the installation of emergency blue lights on campus. “The lack of emergency blue lights has been an ongoing issue that can no longer be ignored. These lights can instantly contact the police and make them aware of a dangerous situation. They can also deter crimes,” Diane wrote. The petition quickly gained traction, rallying support from students, parents, faculty, and the broader community.
The Power of a Petition: Diane Moon Takes Action
Diane told Change.org that after Laken’s death, UGA canceled school the next day and many students discussed the situation on Yik Yak, a communication platform for college students. “Many students suggested safety solutions and pointed out security blind spots that UGA should address,” she said. Diane thought that UGA’s decision makers may not see the significant support for increased safety measures if it was contained to Yik Yak, which inspired her to start the petition.
“I thought that a petition would hold more weight and receive attention beyond UGA’s student body. It could reach parents, students from other schools, and UGA’s staff. It was also important to present a well-worded petition with consolidated ideas that would help people understand the students’ demands to UGA,” she said.
Diane said what she learned from the process of starting a petition is “that students should act immediately if they have an idea so all eyes are on the issue. UGA had an ongoing safety issue that flew under the radar until all students focused on the issue for several days.” She also emphasized the importance of reaching out to media outlets quickly to bring more awareness to the cause.
A Community-Driven Victory: UGA Installs Emergency Blue Lights
The petition was one of many tools used by the community to advocate for change. It served as a focal point for collective action, bringing together diverse voices united by a common cause: the safety of UGA students. The relentless efforts of the petition starter and other supporters paid off when, in February, UGA announced the installation of blue light call boxes equipped with security cameras, lighting, and Wi-Fi at select locations on campus.
Emergency blue lights, also known as call boxes, are vital safety tools on college campuses. These devices allow individuals to quickly contact campus police in an emergency, providing immediate assistance and potentially deterring criminal activity. The presence of these lights can make a significant difference in response times and overall campus safety.
This victory demonstrates the power of grassroots activism and the impact of community-driven initiatives. It also underscores the importance of prioritizing student safety through practical and effective measures. The UGA administration’s response to the petition reflects a commitment to creating a safer environment for all students, a goal that resonates deeply with the entire university community.
The Growing Need for Increased Campus Security
Campus safety is a critical concern for educational institutions nationwide. Violence and crime on college campuses highlight the vulnerabilities students face daily. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there were over 28,000 reported criminal incidents on campuses in 2018 alone, underscoring the need for robust safety measures. Ensuring the security of students is not only about preventing crime but also about fostering an environment where students feel safe and supported.
Join the Movement: How You Can Help
The successful installation of emergency blue lights at UGA is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together to advocate for change. It also serves as a reminder that the fight for campus safety is ongoing. Educational institutions must continuously assess and improve their security measures to protect their students and provide a safe learning environment.
Together, we can make a difference and create safer, more supportive communities for everyone. Learn more about the Change.org impact here or start your own petition for a change!
