Improve Financial Education in Schools

Improve Financial Education in Schools

The Issue

Money is an intrinsic part of modern life as we live in one of the most competitive consumer economies yet most young people have very little understanding of the financial world that surrounds us and are disadvantaged as a result.

Since I was seven years old, I have been utterly fascinated by personal finance and business learning an awful lot along the way. In more recent years, I have seen my friends and peers struggle and show no awareness of financial issues which has made me concerned for others.

Despite financial education being on the National Curriculum in the UK, most schools (being academies) don’t teach it very well or not at all. This is a massive problem for young people as many don’t know the basics which will have dire consequences when they enter the real world.

So far, I’ve done a questionnaire where I’ve asked a group of secondary school students their opinions on financial education and the results are seriously concerning and have subsequently produced a report on the findings.

64% said they do not think the financial education they are receiving will set them up well for life while 38% say that it is rarely mentioned at their school.

Although some progress has been made through Martin Lewis distributing textbooks to every state school in the UK, there is still a long way to go as people really don’t seem to be learning anything and there has been no real progress.

For me, proper financial education is the key to the next generation having a prosperous future however many others do not see that way and I’ve now decided to try and do something about it.
