Remove Shahjahan Khan MP from his duties as the Shipping Minister of Govt of Bangladesh with immediate effect for his utter failure in preventing the motor launches from overcrowding and capsizing.
The Issue
This is important as this man is solely responsible for failing to oversee an accident-prone water transport system in Bangladesh that is riddled with corruption and mismanagement. The system completely disregards human safety for profit maximization. The minister is directly responsible for aiding and abetting the perpetrators of this ‘crime’ that regularly causes thousands of innocent people to lose their lives each year in Bangladesh.
The recent event of MV Pinak 6 capsizing in the river Padma in Lauhajang, Munshiganj on 4th August 2014 causing the loss of at least 200 lives is the most recent specimen of the callousness that is routinely observed in the Government Apparatus that chronically – maybe even intentionally - fails to ensure the water-worthiness of these launches to a bare minimum level. The minister must be sacked immediately after accepting the full responsibility for the 200 innocent lives that perished in the incident.
