Hallam Union has behaved in an undemocratic way. Re-run the referendum.
The Issue
In a recent referendum (the first at the union since 2009) Students have been betrayed.
The officer team has broken campaigning regulations by campaigning through their official accounts. When challenged, the opposition were told the regulations they had been sent were wrong. When the 'correct' regulations were sent out, they still said officers were not allowed to campaign. The union would not address this.
When voting emails were not sent, the union claimed innocence. Attempting to blame an outsourced companythey have paid to run the referendum (Electoral Reforms Service) . When presented with students names and student numbers who had not recieved the email, we were told it was the students responsibility to ensure they got the email, rather than the union's responsibility that every student has a voice.
Simmillar issues have been had when using ERS for officer elections, so the union knew of the problems before hand, and should have taken measures against them.
This has been a direct, and deliberate affront to student democracy, and they cannot be allowed to get away with it.
