The University of Edinburgh's international student community is 12,000 members strong. We hail from all around the globe, and we're all proud to call this city home.
Getting home after exams is a bit tricky though. It's common wisdom that a ticket booked months in advance, be it a train ticket or airfare, will be cheaper than one booked last minute.
All students, if they live in Brisbane or Birmingham, have to wait until mid-semester at the earliest to start planning their trips home. In a time when the Government in Westminster plans to raise fees for International Students to use the NHS, access A&E services, and slash subsidies for dental and optician services, allowing International Students to book their flights home much earlier is a change that the University of Edinburgh can make to help make Uni more affordable for International Students.
This isn't just an International Student's issue, even though it affects them disproportionately. Scottish and RUK students would benefit from exam timetables released before each semester. The ability to plan ahead, whether you're starting a job, placement, or internship, or even travelling over the summer, is a benefit that the Uni bureaucracy currently denies all students.
To that end, the International Students Action Group in EUSA is running a campaign to petition Prof. Sir Timothy O'Shea to release exam timetables before the start of term.
The University should not change its policies on students' ability to change courses at all - students deserve an exam scheduling policy that finds a way to accommodate the multitude of reasons why a student might want to change a course while allowing students to effectively plan their breaks.
This issue has been on many Sabbatical Officer's manifesto for years now. Let's do something about it. Please sign the petition online or in person!
