On Tuesday 8th October, the Welsh Government announced its draft budget for 2014/15 which outlined a cut of £65 million to post-16 education in Wales. This includes £20 million from higher education and £45 million from further education, work-based learning contracts, adult community learning and sixth forms.

With Fund Further, Fund Higher we are calling for the proposed cuts to post-16 and higher education in Wales to be reversed.

What difference does it make? 

Further and higher education in Wales is vital in offering up second chances to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in Wales and providing the skills that the Welsh economy needs. Cutting college and university budgets risks limiting places, the loss of courses and the cutting of already stretched student support services.  

Given education spending has been ring-fenced in England and the proposed education cuts in Scotland reduced, now is not the time for Wales to put education, and the investment in Wales’ future, at risk. It is not too late for us to make our voices heard in opposition to these proposed cuts, the draft budget is exactly that, a draft. The committee that scrutinizes the budget will report on the 12 November and the budget motion will be tabled on 3 December. This isn’t final and we can still have an impact.

Now is the time for us to work together, to mobilise students, our families and our communities to make our voices heard, not just for current and future students but for the future of all those in Wales who have a stake in the opportunities that Wales is able to offer.

Pa wahaniaeth mae’n ei wneud?

Mae addysg bellach ac uwch yng Nghymru’n hanfodol bwysig mewn cynnig ail gyfle i’r bobl mwyaf bregus a difreintiedig mewn cymdeithas, ynghyd â darparu’r sgiliau sydd eu hangen ar economi Cymru.  Mae torri cyllidebau colegau a phrifysgolion yn creu risg o gyfyngu ar leoedd, colli cyrsiau a lleihau gwasanaethau cefnogaeth i fyfyrwyr sydd eisoes dan straen.

O gofio fod gwariant ar addysg wedi cael ei neilltuo yn Lloegr a bod y toriadau arfaethedig i addysg yn yr Alban wedi cael eu lleihau, nid nawr yw’r amser i Gymru fygwth addysg a buddosoddiad yn nyfodol Cymru.  Nid yw’n rhy hwyr i ni sicrhau fod ein lleisiau i’w clywed mewn gwrthwynebiad i’r toriadau arfaethedig hyn; cyllideb ddrafft yw hon, wedi’r cyfan.  Bydd y pwyllgor sy’n archwilio’r gyllideb yn adrodd yn ôl ar 12 Tachwedd a chaiff y cynnig ar y gyllideb ei gyflwyno ar 3 Rhagfyr.  Nid yw hwn yn benderfyniad terfynol ac mae’n dal i fod yn bosibl i greu effaith.

Nawr yw’r amser i ni weithio gyda’n gilydd, i annog myfyrwyr, ein teuluoedd a’n cymunedau i wneud yn sicr fod eu lleisiau i’w clywed, nid dim ond er mwyn myfyrwyr y presennol a’r dyfodol, ond er mwyn dyfodol pawb yng Nghymru sy’n chwarae rhan yn y cyfleoedd sydd ar gael yng Nghymru.
