Convicted reckless drivers who kill and maim should not be again entrusted with the privilege and responsibility that constitutes a driving licence.

Convicted reckless drivers who kill and maim should not be again entrusted with the privilege and responsibility that constitutes a driving licence.
The Issue
Bored of reading about someone else who has had a loved one snatched from them by an idiot on the roads? Worried that one day that news will become more personal for you? Tired of witnessing lethal acts of driving on the roads and having to drive for other people? I am as well and I've had enough.
In the UK in 2012 1,754 people lost their lives on the roads. A further 23,039 were seriously injured. This is the big life changing stuff you don't want to ever deal with, brain injury, paralysis and all manner of permanent disabilities. Nearly 171,000 more were 'slightly injured', they're the ones who perhaps got lucky.
Motorists killed another 60 people on pavements and verges in 2007-2008 yet society focuses on the very occasional pedestrian death caused by a cyclist. We watch thousands of hours of 'Road Wars' and 'Craziest Police Chases' on the television seemingly immune from the horrific nature of what is happening around us. It is truly a case of eyes wide shut whenever motoring law is concerned.
In the UK we have a lower than average European record of child safety on the roads. Parents continually cite motor vehicles as the primary reason for not allowing their children to cycle and walk more. Obesity levels continue to rise as does congestion and in the UK an estimated 35,000 to 50,000 people face premature death per year due to air quality. Europe has threatened to fine the UK for its failure to act on increasingly poor air quality.
It's not a great picture but our MP's continually fail to act in any meaningful way to address the problems. They keep insisting all is fine. It's almost as if they feel the death and injury rates are perfectly acceptable and we can do no better.
Well, we can do much better. Back in the real world people keep losing their lives and in many cases it is entirely needless for want of people acting in a responsible manner. Its simply about common decency and a respect for life, yours and those you love.
Unfortunately there are too many examples of motorists literally murdering people and having it diluted as 'an accident'. This campaign has been started after yet another disgraceful story of a drunken driver, who was already on a driving ban, overtaking on double white lines and crashing into a young woman out cycling.
Names have not been included as they are not essential but the incident itself is. The driver then ran away from his devastation with no respect or care for anyone left behind. He was sentenced recently and will face 6 years in prison and a 3 year driving ban. He will most likely be released earlier and after passing an extended re-test society will allow him, and others like him to join you and your family back on the roads. Think about it.
In any other situation in life does society allow an individual to once again access something that has previously resulted in that person causing death or serious injury to others?
Do we allow the sex offender to go back to school to teach your child as they probably won't offend again?
Do we restore the firearms licence of a violent offender and hope all will be fine as they didn't mean to shoot anyone last time?
Do we excuse the negligent or dangerous doctor and entrust them to 'have a go' with our ill children, parents or partners as they were just having a bad day?
Is the commercial pilot with an alcohol dependency placed back into the cockpit to fly you to your holiday destination because it's not fair that they have no career?
It's time that those in society who are happy to gamble with your life and those around you in their cars or any motorised transportation were held accountable for their decision to operate that vehicle in a certain manner. Yes, there are very genuine accidents but I do not accept that every time someone else is killed or maimed that 'it just happened'.
All of us are entirely responsible for the way we choose to drive and I doubt there is a single motorist who hasn't witnessed a horrendous act and felt angered by the decisions of that particular driver. A licence has value and for many it is the greatest responsibility they will ever have.
The aim is not to remove a licence where death or serious injury has occurred and the driver is not at fault.
The aim is to ensure that those who are not responsible enough to drive who go on to kill through recklessness are not allowed to be in a position of responsibilty again. The same would apply where quality of life has been so damaged that the victim will never have the same or similar quality of life ever again.
Where a banned driver then ignores that order and places countless lives at risk through selfishness a substantial and mandatory custodial sentance should be applied that cannot be watered down or argued against by a legal representative. Drivers are grown ups, it's time they acted like that and respected the greater need for safety in recognition of the shattering devastation typically left in their wake.
The time to bring such drivers to full account is long overdue. Please add your support and show government that you place value on your life and of those you love. Demand that roads are not needlessly taking lives for want of strong leadership from those that should be looking out for us all.
Protect your right to travel free of unnecessary danger and help to change the transport system for the better. Thank you.
