Oppose government cuts, refuse to evict tenants, reclassify council houses
Oppose government cuts, refuse to evict tenants, reclassify council houses
The Issue
We call on our local councillors to oppose the cuts and stand with the people of Burngreave and other communities in Sheffield who are having the services they rely on threatened with closure.
We also call on our councilors to follow the examples of Dundee, Edinburgh and Leeds Councils and refuse to persecute the poor through the government’s proposed “bedroom tax”. The least they should do is refuse to evict council house tenants that cannot afford to pay their rent due to the "bedroom tax", like Dundee and Edinburgh Council have done. We also want them to reclassify council houses so that no occupants have to pay the "bedroom tax".
This is because the ConDem government's spending cuts that Sheffield's Labour led council is implementing are going to affect services in Burngreave; services people in Burngreave rely upon.
The government also wants every council tenant who 'under-occupies' their property to pay a "bedroom tax" for the number of rooms the government thinks they do not need to use in the property.
Services which are having their funding reviewed include:
- Early years services
- Pitsmoor Adventure Playground
- Verdon Recreation Centre
- Advice services
- Nursery services
- Study support
- Library services
Sheffield council does not have to implement the government's cuts. Councilors can produce a 'needs' budget and stand with the people of Sheffield in defense of these essential services.
Everyone is welcome to join us handing this petition at the next local councilor's surgery at 11am, Saturday 13th April, Burngreave Library, 179 Spital Hill, Burngreave, S4 7LF
