British Government and Scottish Office: Drop Legal Proceedings Against Mr Alan "Citizen" Smart

The Issue

Mr Alan Smart, popularly known as Citizen Smart, has written and performed a number of songs protesting against Bedroom Tax and other aspects of the Welfare Reform.  His songs are not offensive in any way, do not contain any foul language, and do not contain any lyrics designed to incite abusive, threatening, aggressive or violent behaviour, or any other form of illegal activity; instead, they have merely presented the views of many in an original and entertaining manner.  His songs have become very popular because of the number of people affected by, and facing hardship owing to, Bedroom Tax and the Welfare Reform.

Although Mr Smart has performed his songs at a number of venues, including public meetings to  protest at various features of the Welfare Reform, he has done so in an entirely peaceful manner; he has never at any time attempted to incite any form of unacceptable behaviour, nor has he attempted to force any person to support or join in with his activities; while many people have gathered at his performances, they have done so of their own volition and not as a result of any form of coercion on the part of Mr Smart.

In any democracy, people are permitted to express their own views and those of others provided they do so in a peaceful way; this is all Mr Smart has done: He has done nothing wrong.  Therefore, this petition calls for all proceedings against him to be dropped, and for him to be allowed to continue writing and performing his songs if he wishes to do so.
