Bring Lil B 'the Based God' to McGill University

Bring Lil B 'the Based God' to McGill University

The Issue

Brandon McCartney, also known as Lil B or the 'Based God', is a 24-year old musician, author, spiritual figure, and motivational speaker. Lil B has achieved global fame and critical acclaim through both his tireless work ethic (he has released 1,000s of tracks in past five years) and his positive "based" ethos. Lil B has amassed close to 400,000 Facebook likes and 850k Twitter followers with his DIY techniques, all without the support of a major label. Along the way, the Based God has developed a cult-like group of supporters, known as the "Task Force", who have been drawn in by his communitarian appeal and commitment to creating a more "based" universe.

As such, this petition's aim is to show the McGill community's support for a Lil B lecture on campus. Mr. McCartney, in an e-mail to McGill students, expressed both a willingness to travel to speak on campus and a desire to have his booking fee paid exclusively by the university. In true based fashion, Lil B refuses to allow students who are struggling financially to foot the bill for his expenses.

A Lil B lecture has academic value in that it will:

- Discuss social media's impact on the music industry, the increased ease with which one can create online communities, and the erosion of barriers between artists and fans.
- The artist's impact on hip-hop music in general. Lil B has been described as the Frank Zappa of rap, an innovator who has blurred the genre boundaries of hip-hop and allowed for the development of several exciting sub-genres.
- Reflections on the 'based' philosophy, and discussions of the inter-connectedness of the global village in the 21st century.

Please sign and voice your support for a Lil B lecture at McGill.
