Lift restrictions currently placed on the number of evening events that can be held at the Corner Gallery each month, allowing the full benefits of this community space to be realised.

The issue

  • Increasing availability will maximize the use of this temporary, community based art-space, which at this stage is only available to the organisers until September/October, when the building is intended to be redeveloped. Two evening events per month severely limits the potential benefits to the community of this project and the amount of positive impact it can have on the local area.

  • When an artist exhibits in the Corner Gallery it would be positive for their work should gain the maximum amount of exposure to the broadest audience possible. Holding different events in the space while their work is on exhibit provides the exhibiting artist/s the opportunity for this broader exposure and increases the likelihood of their financial independence.

  • Corner Gallery events bring a large number of people to the Subiaco area. This in turn creates revenue opportunities for other businesses in the local Subiaco area and it creates more interest in Subiaco as a place to visit.

  • The events the Corner Gallery are holding have had little to no impact on local residents. The Corner Gallery is being approached by many groups who want to hire the gallery to hold art, film and culturally based functions and events in the evening. Currently they are unable to accommodate the demand for these events due the restrictions placed on their planning approval. I have been assured that the visitors to the gallery are respectful and are asked to move on from any events/workshops quietly and respectfully.

  • Subiaco Mayor Henderson has shown her support for the space. The Subiaco council has used the space for events and has shown continued interest in utilising the space for evening arts events such as film launches and project launches. There is also interest from various art groups to hold afternoon/evening art workshops for young people right through to adults.

  • Corner Gallery is enriching the culture of Subiaco and making it a more interesting, colourful and vibrant area to visit, building the arts culture in Subiaco.

  • The Corner Gallery is providing a reliable resource for young artists to promote their artwork and gain exposure. This is a positive community project, which benefits many different communities and groups.
