Tammy Baldwin is an American politician serving as the senior United States Senator from Wisconsin, a position she has fulfilled since January 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, she is the first woman elected to represent Wisconsin in the U.S. Congress and also the first openly gay person elected to the U.S. Senate. Prior to her senate service, she represented Wisconsin's 2nd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2013. Baldwin’s political career has been marked by her advocacy for health care reform, women's rights, and LGBTQ+ rights.
