New York City Council

The New York City Council is the legislative body of the City of New York. It consists of 51 members, each elected from geographic districts for four-year terms. As the primary responsibility of city legislation, the council is tasked with enacting and amending local laws, providing oversight for mayoral agencies, making land use decisions and having the final say on the city's budget. The council serves as a check and balance on the mayor's power, with the ability to override a mayoral veto by a two-thirds majority.
