HELP SAVE THE BANKSIA RD CONSERVATION RESERVE: STOP HANSON’S SAND MINE

Please add your signature today to help stop corporate greed from destroying people’s lives and the threatened Banksia Woodlands. Construction company Hanson Australia is pushing ahead with a proposed sand mine in Wellard, Western Australia (41km from Perth), despite strong objections by the City of Kwinana and local residents about the environmental damage it will cause and the negative health and safety impacts on the local community. We are deeply concerned to learn that Hanson Australia is calling for public comment on the sand mining of the former Banksia Road Rifle Range area, which for several years has been under the control of the City of Kwinana Council as a conservation reserve (a Conservation Advice was approved August 2016). The Banksia Road conservation reserve is 26 hectares (64 acres) in size, covered in mostly native vegetation, which contains 100’s of species of native flora & fauna - including six conservation-significant species like the endangered Carnaby's Black Cockatoos and the King Spider Orchid. “If approved, this mine would pave the way for broad scale clearing of natural vegetation of unique Banksia Woodlands in the Wellard area, resulting in an environment devoid of native flora and fauna,” Mayor Adams said. Hanson has ignored at the cost to the health and safety of local families the Department of Mines 500m buffer zone. Within the 500m buffer zone there are over 40 households. Home for a large cross section of the population from young families to retirees. All hard-working average people that will be severely negatively impacted if this mine goes ahead. There are also two residential developments within 2km’s of the mine and will also suffer from the establishment of this mine. Health & safety concerns of the local community: Silica dust implications (the new asbestos) causing major health implications to surrounding rural and housing estate residents. Lead contamination of top soil that if disturbed will cause contamination of the air, rain water (vital for residents as most are not on scheme water) and ground water with major health implications. Noise pollution from an operation that is not suitable or welcome for the area. Clearing this land will mean a loss in a pivotal area necessary for the protection of many species of flora and fauna that provide a peaceful & beautiful back drop to the area. As well as traffic hazards caused by the displacement of animals as they are forced out of their habitats. 60 million litres of water per year for over a decade will be removed from the water table. Many residents rely on bores for water. Depleting the local water table will lead to the death of native vegetation and added expense for residence to replace bores. An increase in trucks using roads not designed for large scale heavy haulage will put community’s safety at risk. Increased road traffic ‘Black Spots’ due to poor sighting and unfavourable road contours. The value of properties in the area will decline greatly because of this mine which far outweighs the value of the mine. All these negative impacts for the tiny savings for the global billion-dollar entity Hanson. Hanson has 83 other sites in the Perth metropolitan region either operational, pending or proposed that are far better suited to sand mining and pose less risk to the vulnerable environment and local people’s lives. The hiring of specialist trained Gender Surgeons in each Australian State and Territory

To the honourable members of the Australian Parliament,  I, Elizabeth Kazon, an Intersex Transgender Female, and my fellow LGBTQIA+ individuals, allies and supporters, call upon you to without delay hire surgeons within the Medicare public health system to perform sex reassignment surgeries, thus making these certified Life Saving Surgeries, affordable for all Transgender and Intersex Australians. Within Australia, Medicare pays a rebate for some Male to Female Sex Reassignment Surgeries and some Female to Male Sex Reassignment Surgeries, however as there isn’t the possibility to have these surgeries performed in the public health system, private surgeons have a virtual monopoly, making these necessary surgeries unaffordable for a majority of Transgender and Intersex individuals. Furthermore, advancements are being made in these surgeries, however there is no opportunity for the private surgeons to learn and use these new techniques as they are constantly backlogged with patients who have no alternatives. The approximate cost in Australia to have a Penile Inversion Vaginoplasty is $18’000 excluding aftercare, fights and accommodation. A new surgery, the Peritoneum Pull-Through Vaginoplasty has been pioneered and is being performed oversees for approximately $20’000-$40’000 USD. This cost is relatively affordable when compared to the $100’000+ payable to have Phalloplasty performed in Australia. These prices are unaffordable, and it should be offered within the public system. In addition, it is with great conviction that we also believe that breast enhancement, breast reduction, Buttocks enhancement and buttocks reduction should also be performed for those holding a valid Intersex or Transgender Diagnosis as such procedures have been proven to greatly improve Transgender and Intersex individuals’ mental health.  We the undersigned call upon you, the Australian Parliament, to without delay, put pressure on the individual states and territories to hire and train 1 specialist surgeon per capital city in Australia plus at least 4 specialist nurses to assist them. These surgeons collectively should be proficient in the following new and older techniques to meet the needs of the Transgender and Intersex Individuals of Australia: ·         Peritoneum Pull-Through Vaginoplasty, ·         Sigmoid Colon Vaginoplasty, ·         Penile Inversion Vaginoplasty, ·         Facial Feminization Surgery, ·         Voice Feminization Surgery, ·         Tracheal Shave, ·         Breast and Buttock Augmentation, ·         Mastectomy, ·         Hysterectomy, ·         Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy, ·         Metoidplasty, ·         Phalloplasty. Yours with hope,

Subsidise continuous glucose monitoring for people with diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic, life threatening, autoimmune condition. The photo above is me heading to ‘diabetes camp’, aged 10. It was a blast, I tell you. I was diagnosed aged 8. I became very sick over a period of a year, lost a lot of weight then went into a coma for 3 days. This didn’t happen because I ate badly or didn’t exercise; my family were very healthy and so was I, until my body started attacking itself. When I awoke, I was trained to test my blood sugars, count carbs and inject insulin 4+ times daily. I’ve been doing this ever since. Type 1 diabetes rewards good care. With focused attention on monitoring my blood glucose, ongoing insulin injections and general good ole healthy living I will have a long and productive life. Severe hyperglycaemia (causing hospitalisation) or hypoglycaemia (causing coma and death) can be negated! Long term negative effects of high blood sugars (damage to eyesight, kidneys etc etc) can be eradicated! New technologies make this SO MUCH easier, at the long term benefit to the taxpayer (hey that’s me too!). This is where the Libre comes in. The Libre is a ‘flash glucose monitor’. It has a sensor that sits below the skin and receives data about my blood glucose every minute. It transmits to my phone and gives me incredible information about how my insulin and other aspects of my life are affecting my BGL. It’s amazing! I’ve been on it for two weeks and am already adjusting my insulin to my health benefit.Currently the sensors are expensive. $100 a fortnight expensive! Add that to the cost of other diabetes supplies and you have healthcare that many just can’t afford. The government has seen fit to make the system free for children and women with gestational diabetes but people like me have to pay full price, which is strange because I was a child with type 1 diabetes once too...and the condition hasn’t changed. I (with my diabetes team at my local hospital, and the 120,000+ people living with type 1 diabetes) would like to see a fair subsidy apply to the Libre sensors, as it is with blood test strips. The Libre system is a replacement for blood test strips and will assist those living with type 1 diabetes to achieve a greater quality of life at benefit to our health system. I am happy to answer questions about type 1 diabetes. This petition will be sent to my Federal member for Brand, Madeleine King MP; Minister for Health, Greg Hunt MP and Shadow Minister for Health, Catherine King. Restrict the use of Glyphosate in public spaces in Rockingham

Local councils around Australia are banning the use of glyphosate, phasing it out or conducting reviews of its use because of health and safety concerns about workers who have suffered extensive exposure to the herbicide which has been linked to non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Councils which have banned glyphosate range from City of Bassendean, Cook Shire Council in far north Queensland, through to Fairfield City Council and Georges River Council in NSW, down to Moyne Shire and Warrnambool City Council in Victoria. The Victorian Government has also begun a six-week review into glyphosate use, and many other councils including Sydney’s Willoughby, Ku-ring-gai, Sutherland Shire and Waverley Councils are also conducting their own reviews. The bans and reviews come after chemical giant Monsanto was ordered to pay more than $300 million to a dying man in California who used Roundup, which contains glyphosate, during his job as a school ground keeper.  I’m calling on the Rockingham City Council to find a safe, cost effective alternative and restrict the use of glyphosate in public areas immediately. This is for our communities safety and the safety of our City workers using this product.   Glyphosate Herbicides are Now Banned or Restricted in 18 Countries Worldwide, most recently Vietnam phasing the product out by 2020. The Cancer Council has called for more research into specific potential risks from the chemical, but urged the public to maintain faith in the present science. CEO Sanchia Aranda said the non-specific research cited by the plaintiff's lawyers required more attention. "It is strong enough to suggest the association with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is worth investigating; we would like to see the global community do more work," Professor Aranda said. With the mounting attention this is getting, and the more Councils and organisations  restrict the use, the more pressure communities are placing on our Local Governments to protect them. MELBOURNE based legal firm Carbone Lawyers has confirmed it has launched an Australia-first lawsuit against Bayer for the role its product Roundup played in causing cancer to Carbone Lawyers' client Michael Ogalirolo. "We've been contacted by landscape gardeners, council workers and farmers, all professions where there is a high exposure to glyphosate." Suggested alternate methods for weed control: the use of the glyphosate can be eliminated by use of alternative weed control methods (such as mechanical slashing) that present lower risks, a registered ready-to-use diluted form of the herbicide is available, natural solutions such as vinegar and salt solutions, weed steamers. We are urging Rockingham to take the higher moral ground, and show our community their health and safety is our number one priority. Please sign and share this petition for City of Rockingham to find a non-toxic, cost effective solution for weed control.  South West Eco Army
