Gary Charles Peters Sr. is an American politician and lawyer, currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Michigan since 2015. Born in 1958, Peters has an extensive background in public service and academia. He is a member of the Democratic Party and previously served as a U.S. Representative for Michigan's 14th congressional district from 2009 to 2015, representing areas including Detroit and Southfield. Prior to his tenure in Congress, Peters was a member of the Michigan State Senate from 1995 to 2002 and a council member in Rochester Hills from 1991 to 1993. He holds multiple degrees, including an MBA in Finance from the University of Detroit Mercy, a JD from Wayne State University, and a Master's in Philosophy from Michigan State University. Additionally, Peters has served as a naval officer and university instructor, further showcasing his diverse career.
