The DC City Council is the legislative body for the capital city of the United States, Washington D.C. Comprised of thirteen members, the council has the authority over various local policies and functions as the city's primary legislative authority. Its array of responsibilities includes creating laws, providing oversight for municipal agencies, and managing and allocating the city's budget. Eleven of the council's members are elected from the city's eight wards, while the remaining two are elected at large. The council also contains a number of committees that cover a wide range of policy areas, all aimed at facilitating the effective governance of Washington D.C.
