The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), known as CEDEAO in French, is a regional political and economic union of fifteen countries located in West Africa. Established on May 28, 1975, its main goal is to promote economic integration across the region, endorsing free trade, industry development, and collective self-reliance among its members. Moreover, it aims to enhance regional co-operation, security and stability among the countries, maintaining a dialogue with the rest of Africa while strengthening existing ties with other international communities. Over the years, ECOWAS has been instrumental in the peaceful settlement of regional disputes and conflicts, supporting democratic transitions, and consolidating the rule of law in West Africa.
