Câmara Municipal do Rio de Janeiro

The Câmara Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, also known as the City Council of Rio de Janeiro, is the legislative body for the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is composed of 51 councilors, elected every four years, who are responsible for the drafting and voting on laws that apply to the city. The Câmara also oversees the executive branch of the city government, currently headed by the Mayor. The building where the Council meets, called Palácio Pedro Ernesto, is an important historical and architectural landmark in downtown Rio.
