Bureau of Prisons

The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is a key component of the United States Department of Justice. Established in 1930 to provide more progressive and humane care for federal inmates, the BOP is responsible for the custody and care of approximately 184,000 federal offenders. This includes inmate housing, medical care, sustenance, and management, as well as the enforcement of prison rules. The BOP's primary task is to protect public safety by ensuring federal offenders serve their sentences of imprisonment in safe, secure, and humane facilities where they can engage in productive work and self-improvement opportunities.
