Armin Laschet is a German politician and the leader of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU). Born on February 18, 1961 in Burtscheid, Germany, he studied law at the universities of Bonn and Munich, receiving his law degree in 1987. He subsequently worked as a journalist and in publishing. His political career took off as a member of the Bundestag, Germany's federal parliament, from 1994 to 1998. He has also served as a member of the European Parliament, and from 2017 to 2021, he held the position of Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state. In January 2021, he was elected chairman of the CDU, succeeding Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.
