Migrate the WNBA from Twitter to LinkedIn
Migrate the WNBA from Twitter to LinkedIn
The Issue
Twitter has become a bad place for people to be. Since Elon Musk took sole ownership and control of the platform, he has fired thousands of employees, invited numerous previously-banned racists, sexists, homophobes and outright Nazi sympathizers back, suspended journalists for reporting on his businesses, and blocked mentions of other social media sites on Twitter. As a result, I believe Twitter is no longer a suitable place for the WNBA, WNBA teams, players and coaches, and the many journalists who cover the WNBA.
In 2020, the league, coaches and players took a strong stand for justice and civil rights; I believe it is time for the league to make another strong statement and publicly leave Twitter for LinkedIn.
There are other social media platforms, but I believe LinkedIn is the most robust destination for the WNBA, given the twin goals of growing the league and maintaining a focus on social justice. LinkedIn has been active since before Twitter even existed. Professional courtesy and business ethics were baked into the platform from the start, and the high-volume ne'er-do-wells that regularly disrupt Twitter and other platforms would be swiftly dealt with on LinkedIn.
Some of you are already on LinkedIn. If nothing else, I encourage the rest of you to join. But I believe the WNBA should not spend a single person-hour more on Twitter. Elon Musk has made it a dismal place.
