Let Me Build on My Land: Stop Municipal Overreach Blocking Housing in Ontario

Let Me Build on My Land: Stop Municipal Overreach Blocking Housing in Ontario
The Issue
I’m being denied the right to build on my own residential property — even after getting Ministry of Environment (MOE) clearance and expert studies confirming it’s safe. Why?
Because the Township of North Grenville, which owns a nearby landfill, is using its authority as both regulator and stakeholder to block my building request — despite no scientific evidence of any risk.
My property at 690 Monkman Road in North Grenville, Ontario, is fully zoned for residential use. Yet for more than a year, I’ve been caught in a procedural trap that violates both the spirit and letter of the Planning Act.
❌ Here's What Happened:
I applied for a minor variance on December 16, 2023.
The Township had 90 days under the Planning Act to respond.
They took over 180 days — double the legal limit — with no valid justification.
My hydrogeologist confirmed the site is safe.
The Ministry of Environment stated they have “no concerns.”
Yet my request was denied, based on vague speculation tied to a landfill the Township itself operates.
⚖️ This Isn’t Just About Me
This is about how easily a local government can:
Delay decisions illegally with no consequence
Ignore expert evidence and ministry guidance
Block residential development during a housing crisis
Exploit conflicts of interest where they regulate their own financial assets
Constructively take private property by stripping its reasonable use
🏗️ In a Housing Crisis, This Should Not Be Happening
We hear every day that Ontario needs more housing. Here is a home site — already zoned, already approved by the province — being blocked by municipal bureaucracy and unchecked power.
📣 I’m Asking For:
The Ontario Land Tribunal to grant immediate relief and acknowledge procedural misconduct.
Minister Paul Calandra to review this case and act on municipal overreach.
Premier Ford to investigate how municipalities are able to block safe housing with no external accountability.
Better checks and balances to prevent municipal regulators from policing their own conflicts.
✅ Sign This Petition If You Believe:
People should be allowed to build on residentially zoned, scientifically safe land.
Delays beyond legal limits should not be tolerated.
Housing access shouldn’t be decided by municipal politics or speculation.
Ontario’s land use planning system needs oversight and reform.
Thank you for helping me push back on a broken system — and for standing up for fairness, evidence-based policy, and access to housing.
