The University of WA is still intent on seeking approval for a residential estate in Underwood Avenue Bushland in Shenton Park. We ask you as Vice-Chancellor of the University of WA, to act so that the housing proposal is withdrawn.
The issue
The Banksia, Jarrah and Tuart bushland is part of the already fragmented original link from Kings Park to Bold Park.
The flock of around 400 endangered Carnaby's Cockatoos feed over the whole bushland. If approval of the proposal were to be given, UWA would be party to the extinction of Carnaby’s cockatoos.
Please reflect that the University does not operate in isolation from the community. UWA receives support, financial and otherwise from the community, from philanthropists and from the corporate sector. If UWA goes ahead with the housing development its reputation is at significant risk.
There are alternatives. The University, with community assistance, could establish an internationally valued Centre of Research, accessible to the community for recreation, education and tourism, which would link strongly with the educational marketing aspirations of UWA.
The future for the Underwood Bushland and for our endangered species is in your hands, and the responsibility is great. To quote the University’s new dictum – ‘embrace the impossible.’ Turn back from the goal of destruction, Vice Chancellor, and see what can be achieved together.
