Honoring Dan Cooper's Legacy - Federally Recognize November 24th as a National Holiday

The Issue

On November 24th, 1971, the legendary Dan Cooper heroically hijacked the Northwest Orient Airlines Flight #305. He boarded the plane with a swagger and sense of style that was high above the grade of any average man during his time. Dan Cooper boarded the plane with only his briefcase. He wore a business suit with a black tie, white shirt, a trench coat, and loafers. With a ransom of $200,000, his parachute, and his briefcase, he jumped into the black of night in the middle of a heavy thunderstorm never to be seen again.

It has been over fifty years since the D.B Cooper plane hijacking. His heroics, style, and mystery, still astonish us all. A mysterious man leaving almost nothing behind, the FBI was forced to close the case down in 2016, preserving whatever evidence Dan Cooper left behind as history.

Dan Cooper's mission was difficult, no other man could have possibly did the impossible in his place. Even today his heroism draws inspirations to all Americans, his resolute determination to succeed, his unwavering resolve in the face of adversity.  He boarded the plane with a mission and despite all the difficulty and against all odds, he successfully fulfilled his goals all while ensuring the safety of the passengers who were completely oblivious to the event thanks to his charm and master planning. He then decided with his wisdom that it was time to depart from this world and take the leap of faith that he took. Thus, Dan Cooper succeeded where many have failed. Fifty years later his story becoming an Epic in its own right and a dashing tale for many children and adults alike. His hijacking still remains the only unsolved hijacking in American history, with the entire tale becoming the most famous unsolved case of all time.

Dan Cooper's legend will always be forever remembered by Americans, his memory forever remaining in our hearts. I say it's time that we codify his heroism and bravery into Federal Law and officially make November 24th a National Holiday memorializing this great man - "Dan Cooper Remembrance Day".

We must also honor his legacy by teaching our children in public schools about his valiant tale. We should be opening flight schools and skydiving centers branded with his name.

We must also drop whatever indictments have been made against Dan Cooper for his alleged "crimes" and posthumously award him with the highest civilian honor, The Presidential Medal of Freedom.

May I also suggest, that we open a skydiving center in Washington State in honor of Dan Cooper and implement a federally subsidized social program in which Americans who are in loving memory of Dan Cooper get to enter a raffle in which they will be given a once-in-a-lifetime free skydive in imitation of Dan Cooper's jump, minus the thunderstorm. Their flights to and from the center and their home cities also to be paid for by the federal government.

There is much speculation regarding Dan Cooper's fate. As author of this petition I believe and say with much regret, that Dan Cooper undoubtedly died that fateful night. The conditions of his skydive were perilous, the wilderness in which he jumped into cold and unforgiving. His parachute and clothing ill-equipped for such conditions and landing. And so, with a tense thunderstorm in the black of night, the harsh winds blowing against his body, the dense sea of trees in the green forest below, and with no visibility of the air or ground, it is with great conviction that I say that Dan Cooper had graciously plummeted into the Earth, his body surely buried within the vast wilderness of Washington State. Every ransom dollar he had taken with him had been recorded and with the technology and tracing they had back then they would have surely captured whatever had been spent into circulation, as the authorities did in the early 1930's with the Lindbergh kidnapping.

Nevertheless, his noble sacrifice will be forever remembered in the hearts of Americans. It is now time to codify his legacy into law - It is time we federally recognize November 24th as a National Holiday to commemorate the legacy and memory of Dan Cooper, AKA D.B. Cooper.

In the case we ever find his body, I ask the President of the United States that we give Dan Cooper a full military funeral with all the honorary customs it has, and that it will be done where his body is to be found and to have Dan Cooper peacefully buried within the wilderness of Washington State.
