Victims Deserve Better. Abusers Deserve Worse!

Victims Deserve Better. Abusers Deserve Worse!

The Issue

I am a survivor of domestic violence, and a mother to a child I had with my abuser. I want her protected since she is at risk of abuse in his care. This is deeply personal to me, but it is not just my story. It's a painful reality for countless individuals in Kentucky and beyond.

Kentucky has long struggled with high rates of domestic violence. According to recent statistics from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Unfortunately, the current laws and support systems are insufficient to adequately protect victims or to hold perpetrators fully accountable for their actions.

Strengthening the laws around domestic violence in Kentucky is imperative. This could involve stricter penalties for domestic abusers and more stringent enforcement of restraining orders, ensuring that they are respected and acted upon immediately by law enforcement. We also need a more robust support system for victims—one that offers practical assistance, such as legal advice, safe housing options, and counseling services.

Victims of domestic violence often remain trapped in abusive situations due to a lack of resources and support. The state government has the power to change this by allocating more funding to victim services and by creating tougher, more comprehensive legislation that puts the safety of victims first.

Reforming domestic violence laws and support systems can protect individuals and save lives. Let us come together as a community to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves and advocate for a safer Kentucky.

Sign this petition to urge Kentucky lawmakers to put stronger legislation in place and to offer more support to victims of domestic violence.
