Urge the WMU Administration to Support our Demands!
The Issue
In light of recent global events and ongoing issues within our campus community, we, the students of Western Michigan University (WMU), hereby present our list of demands. These demands aim to enhance transparency, inclusivity, and ethical standards within our university. They reflect our commitment to fostering an environment of mutual respect and accountability. We expect a formal acknowledgment and a detailed response to each item listed.
- Ceasefire Resolution: Adoption an immediate formal unconditional ceasefire resolution, affirming the University’s commitment to peace and non-violence in all its forms, as well as an official statement clearly stating that Western Michigan University is calling for a permanent, immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza.
- Responsiveness and Communication: Commitment to increased responsiveness, with a guarantee to reply to all formal communications within an agreed upon timeframe; responses must be personalized and directly address the concerns raised, avoiding the use of generic or templated communications.

Protection and Acknowledgment: Enhanced protection measures for Palestinian faculty and students, including an official statement from President Montgomery reaffirming that he again commits to communicating with the student body via emails fully addressing the situation, including but not limited to; the ongoing genocide of Palestinian peoples and cultures, the importance of a ceasefire to take place, and the recognition the hardships faced by the Jewish and Arab members of our community, and specifically acknowledging:
- WMU alumni and families of faculty/students affected in Gaza.
- Condemnation of the destruction of educational institutions (scholasticide) in conflict zones.
- A formal and personalized response to faculty regarding the plight of WMU alumni, Abedalazeez Abushaban. -
Transparency in Finances: Full transparency regarding the University's profits and investments, with detailed disclosures made publicly available on a bi-annual basis.

Divestment: Immediate divestment from all weapons and arms manufacturers, with a broader review and cessation of all monetary or other ties to Israel, conducted in a manner that aligns with legal and contractual obligations.

Operational Changes: the Starbucks located in the New Student Center to be removed and replaced with an alternative vendor that aligns more closely with University.
- Implementation and Monitoring: A joint committee of Administration, Faculty, and Student Representatives will be established to monitor the implementation of this Agreement and to discuss any adjustments or further actions that may be necessary. This joint committee will be composed of four (4) Student Representatives, (2) Faculty Representatives, and four (4) Administration Representatives.
