Petition to Demand ACLU Divestment from Israel

The Issue

For the past year, we have witnessed with horror the ongoing suffering of the Palestinians. We have seen images that surpass the depictions of any horror film and convey emotions that words cannot fully express. This suffering represents a peak in the longstanding oppression of Palestinians over the past 75 years under an apartheid Israeli state.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) claims to be an organization devoted to protecting civil liberties and justice. Yet, it continues to invest in and support Israel, despite the allegations of its apartheid practices. This contradiction was highlighted when the ACLU rejected a petition from over 650 of its own staff members calling for divestment from Israel and condemnation of U.S. military aid to the state.

The ACLU’s leadership voted 50-4 against the petition, stating that its mission was solely focused on domestic civil rights and that divesting would harm its financial returns. This decision not only contradicts the principles of justice but also ignores the organization’s own history of taking stances on international issues, such as Vietnam and apartheid South Africa.

This petition should never have been necessary. Now, we must amplify the voices of those within the ACLU who courageously spoke up. It’s time for all of us to stand in solidarity and demand that the ACLU divest fully from Israel. Sign this petition and join the movement to hold them accountable.

Let the ACLU know that this will not stand!
