The MBMS MUN club is important in so many ways, and as a 6th grader who will be going to Mira Costa, I was planning to use the MUN club as an introduction and as a way to have a smoother introduction into the Model United Nations elective in High School. But just in general, MUN is such a great club that enhances so many skills that actually help in everyday life, like social skills, speaking skills, confidence, and gives people a fun place to socialize while learning which helps in building a better relation with learning!
Sad to hear that one of the best and most practical academic programs at MBMS may be at risk. Model UN is a great tool to teach a confluence of skills such as history, English, writing, political science, economics and negotiations. These are all great learnings that our kids should experience to be optimally prepared for a successful future in school, life and the professional world.
It is devastating how our school MUN club program is being shut down. The necessary incident needed to be focused on isn’t solved yet, and now the admin is closing a program that isn’t worrying the whole school or even district. Speaking skills for presentations and off the cup speeches are presented in this club which tremendously helps with academic related projects. It’s funny to see how the school likes to show that they are doing something by removing or implementing random sanctions or acts. Lunch time MUN won’t be the same. With students eating and chatting, we won’t be able to learn as much. To add on, the high schoolers know formally what is to be done in MUN and they can’t come during school. With the school closing down after school MUN club, this upsets dozens of students varying grades. Improvement on history and fields of studies are seen after MUN conferences as i’ts talking about global issues past and present in crisis.
I have been in the MBMS MUN program since sixth grade. So to hear the board is shutting it down is definitely devastating and 100% a heart break for me. I gained a ton of knowledge, social skills, speaking skills and more just from MBMS MUN alone. As well the highschoolers are beyond sweet and often help me out with stuff besides MUN. So shutting down MUN is like shutting down a family business, something that hurts deep and hard.
I signed this because I am strongly against AI within educational borders. To normalize the usage of AI in casual education apps, Duolingo, for example, is to push the payload of AI being normalized for actual education within institutions. It's unacceptable. Language is a human thing. Of course, tools like Grammarly exist and adapt our languages but that is a matter of user assistance (although having things being rewritten is disgusting). As stated in this petition, the quality will decline. AI has not progressed far enough to even be useful. From personal experience with educational AI school material, it's just a disaster and frustration for you and the AI (because Lord knows we're foolishly pushing towards sentience or at least a generated version of it).
Language learning is a core part of what it means to be human. Please don’t fire human workers with families and friends and lives just to make a bit more profit. Unless something changes, I will not renew my paid membership.
I already canceled my Duolingo subscription when Duolingo started laying off contract workers months ago. Their confirmation that they'll continue using AI, and laying off and not hiring more workers in the process, is deeply concerning to me and is making me consider deleting my account entirely. Duolingo, please reverse course - or at least wait until we have a better understanding of AI and have safeguards in place.
After Duolingo's AI first announcement, I requested they fully delete my account, left my family plan, and deleted the app. I'll return when they recommit to the purpose of language learning - to improve human lives, not replace them.
I have an over 4.5 year streak on Duolingo, and over the time I've used it, I've noticed the quality in learning drop significantly. AI can't replicate the job of a human, especially with languages. If that were the case, we would just rely on Google Translate. We come to Duolingo to do something more—to put an effort into training our minds, building up the power to speak for ourselves. If people like me are choosing to develop this skill by investing so much time through your app, it seems only reasonable that you invest in us in return.
