The observatory at the museum has inspired the community for generations. Almost every adult who has lived in the area, remembers coming up to the observatory to look in the telescope. Usually one of the top experiences of childhood. The universe is wondering, will thousands of visitors continue to look into space from the museum, or will it be a thing of the past? Space exhibits spark an interest in learning and science.

Before I became the Planetarium Educator of the Poinciana Elementary School of Science, Mathematics & Technology from 2000 to 2009, I had the pleasure of working at the Buzz Aldrin Planetarium at the South Florida Science Museum. I did the 2:00 pm planetarium show each day, as well as travel around the county with the “blow-up” planetarium to libraries and schools. You can’t believe how much the students and adults both enjoyed and learned about the stars and astronomy in general. I find it difficult to believe that the powers that be at the Cox Science Center do not support the continuation of offering the students and adults of our county the widely popular activities, that only a modern Planetarium can provide. Astronomy studies are one of the most important programs the Science Museum offers. It makes no sense at all to take away from the public this most important part of what the Science Center offers.

#Plutoisaplanettoo Just because it doesn’t clear its orbit path does not undo its status as a celestial body orbiting a star, which is technically all that is required for an object to be a planet. It also doesn’t undo the generations of people that grew up learning Pluto was a planet and still Believe it. We shouldn’t just change the rules when its convenient.
