As one of 4 circus performers in my family, I strongly agree that Circus Arts should be considered an official art form by the NEA. The Circus Arts brings together dance, music, visual art and partners those things with great athleticism to create an extremely captivating art form for both young and old. The Circus Arts are both educational and entertaining. They offer both a physical and creative outlet for performers from a variety of backgrounds.
I hope that the NEA can appreciate these facts about Circus Arts and make it an official art form.
Serra supported: Tell Congress to Support the NEA in Recognizing the Circus Arts As An Official Art FormAs a yoga instructor and a new circus practitioner, I’m learning about circus and how it changes lives. It changed my life. I see how a lot of people young and old involved in other arts are transitioning to circus arts and have never look back including myself. Circus is a powerful art form, a skill for the youth, life for adults and therapy for elderly . There is 94 yr retired teacher who I see every Monday and all he talks about is circus. He said, “I love this stuff Bear, this is what keeps he alive.”
Yogi Bear supported: Tell Congress to Support the NEA in Recognizing the Circus Arts As An Official Art FormI was involved in the drama department and was the District Rep for troupe 6451 from 2005-2006. We had Mrs. Faisal then. I felt like our theatre department thrived and changed my life. It helped me so much and gave me so much confidence to try new things. Some of my best memories are around being involved with that drama department. I still share stories from that time in my life and use some of the things I learned through theater. Students deserve to have access to the arts and theater. I hope you find a way to save this program!!
Sarah supported: SAVE CENTENNIAL’S THEATER PROGRAM- don’t let local arts dieFormer student class of 13 I worked with the stage craft part of the theater for 3 years. Were you learn so much about technical aspects of stage. We built sets we solved problems that arose like how do we power lights in the middle of the stage without running cables that ruining aesthetic of the scene. As many people will say high school is a time to discover and explore interest. While there are many opportunities but theater is such a large part of it all don’t take it away.
Jordan supported: SAVE CENTENNIAL’S THEATER PROGRAM- don’t let local arts dieThis feels like an episode of Glee. Theatre kids all banning together to make sure their department stays funded. The sad part about all of it is that this isn’t tv or some story, it’s real life and it’s happening in the town i grew up in. The south has always had trouble with educational funding but, that doesn’t make it acceptable. The arts should be accessible to youth everywhere! Theatre is more than just the play you see, it’s helping shape young minds and aiding them in their journey through life. Many youth join theatre because they feel they don’t belong in any other social circle. Theatre is an outlet for creativity but also fosters strong relationships and personal skills. You can’t thrive in life on informational learning alone. You have to learn to publicly speak, to be comfortable in your own skin, express your emotions. It’s unfair that an entire program is being shut down for lack of recognition and care. A program that fosters so much more transmutable skills in life than a football field ever would.
Noah supported: SAVE CENTENNIAL’S THEATER PROGRAM- don’t let local arts dieTheater gave me a place to feel like my talents were worth sharing. Not only did it give me a creative outlet, but it promoted fundamental principles for life such as teamwork, dedication, openness to learning, acceptance to constructive criticism, leadership, and the ability to stand in front of an audience — big or small — and confidently present something I worked hard on. Maybe it’s not a field and a ball of some sort, but it’s hours of rehearsal. It’s countless methods of interpretation. It’s a platform to nurture a competitive spirit. It’s voice lessons, dance lessons, practicing different genres and mastering them to deliver a convincing and emotional performance. Making this wonderful form of art inaccessible to students will take away a safe space and lead many theater kids to feel silenced and unsupported. These unmotivated and overwhelmed students will be barred from having the same relief as other students in their respective clubs and sports; this may lead to lower attendance and lower grades. Please reconsider this move; if not for the kids, then at least for your statistics.
Patricia supported: SAVE CENTENNIAL’S THEATER PROGRAM- don’t let local arts dieThis program was the absolute highlight of my high school experience. A place of safety, expression and camaraderie for many—the moments created on this stage are irreplaceable. The performing arts enriches lives for thespians and families alike. Removing programs as essential as this would be a disservice to the arts, the community and most importantly the students whose futures will be molded by the invaluable experiences garnered through theater.
leah supported: SAVE CENTENNIAL’S THEATER PROGRAM- don’t let local arts dieWe had nothing like this in old my neighborhood in Chicago. Maybe if there was these programs in my neighborhood there wouldn't have been so much violence and robberies... We need our children to experience the joy and pride of theatre... As a kid I always wanted to belong to something like this. All these years later and all these miles away I can finally participate.
